Opening of the Memorial Park Dobrava (Maribor, Slovenia)

0
The opening ceremony of the Memorial Park Dobrava took place on Wednesday 20th of June 2012.

Official speaker was Danilo Türk, PhD, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, who stressed the Memorial Park Dobrava presents an important part of Slovenian history and a symbol of our collective memory, where unique stories about the history of an individual, of towns and nation are laid.

The ceremony was also attended by Franc Kangler, Mayor of Maribor, Lidija Pliberešk, Msc, the Director of Pogrebno podjetje Maribor and the President of ASCE, Suzana Žilič Fišer, PhD, the Director of Public institute Maribor 2012 and many other politicians, diplomats and ambassadors from Cyprus, Greece, the United States, Great Britain, Italy, Russia, Montenegro, Australia, New Zealand, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Germany, Lithuania, France, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ukraine, Serbia and Poland.

Pogrebno podjetje Maribor runs a large project “War Graves”, which also includes the »Memorial park Dobrava«. The project wants to present war graves to the public as an element evoking memory and presenting the past without any ideological dimensions. The arrangement in the form of a park dedicated to all war victims in the Maribor area will mean a transition from an anonymous grave to a cultural monument or an area of cultural heritage, which is reflected through a higher level of public interest. The right to human dignity and piety towards war and postwar victims bring the issue of graves more and more to the fore.

The memorial park will be divided into three sections: graves from the World War I and World War II in the Pobrežje cemetery, and graves of the war victims after the Second World II in the village of Dobrava near Tezno. It is estimated that approximately 45.000 people got executed in the tank trench by the forest. The anonymous graveyard is thus transitioning into a cultural monument, which reflects a higher public interest.

The opening accompanied with words of noble Slovenian poets: Andrej Brvar, Miljana Cunta, Alojz Ihan, Aleš Šteger, Tomaž Šalamun, and Ciril Zlobec.

  • Women in nineteenth and twentieth centuries: history, politics and culture from the point of view of women, as seen through female social roles and symbolism;
  • The industrial and applied arts: starting from the late nineteenth century, artists and craftmen combined tradition with a renewal of established artistic idioms in glass-making, mosaics, ceramics and architectural ornamentation;
  • The Verano Cemetery as a City. Three generations of architects and urban planners: the urban planning that went into the overall development of the Monumental Cemetery, from its foundation to its growth in the twentieth century, provides an overview of a century of architectural history.

Charles Dickens in Bologna and a memorable visit to the Certosa
Presentation of the book by Roberto Martorelli, Valeria Roncuzzi and Gino Scatasta.
This year, all over the world, the bicentenary of the birth of the famous English writer Charles Dickens (1812-1870) is celebrated. In his Pictures from Italy (1846) he offers his readers, among others, also a ‘picturesque’ description of Bologna, celebrating its art. The author has left us lively pages on places and people he met during his stay in town in November 1844. At the centre of his recollections is the vivid memory of his visit to the Certosa cemetery, the preferential destination of the cultivated traveller in XIX century.Thanks to the discovery of the letters of the keeper-guide who accompanied him, it has been possible to reconstruct the visit itself and to identify the works that were admired. A large collection of images and several explanatory entries allow recalling the atmospheres of Bologna at the time, that the English writer defined as an ancient and austere town with “an unspecified grave and learned something”.

Fondazione CaRisBo - Palazzo Saraceni, via Farini 15
Free admission, no booking is required.

A guided tour in the Certosa will follow, 9 p.m., entitled Seguendo le orme di Dickens (Following Dickens’ steps). For further details see the Didasco programme.

La Grande Guerra
Showing of the film by Mario Monicelli (1959) and visit to the charnel Monument to the Dead of the WWI. Organization by Atti Sonori, guided tour with Mirtide Gavelli. The script alternates, in the best tradition of the so-called commedia all’italiana, comedy and irony, and dramatic and sour moments. La Grande Guerra was the first important film that Italy devoted to WWI and Mario Monicelli put together a first class cast: Vittorio Gassman; Alberto Sordi; Silvana Mangano; Folco Lulli; Bernard Blier; Romolo Valli. The launch was preceded by heated debates, as it was perceived to show little respect towards the memory of the dead: in fact, it turned out to be a great success and the first,affectionate although bitter, tribute to hundreds of thousands of war casualties.

A 5 euro contribution is required and it will be entirely donated for the enhancement of the Cemetery. Information please call no.: 051.347592 (Tues-Sun 9 a.m.-1 p.m.), museorisorgimento@comune.bologna.it

Monumental Cemetery of Lecco, 1882

The fields designated as municipal burial grounds are flanked on three sides by private chapels, all joined by a walkway.

The lovely Neo-Gothic portico is an elegant exception to the dominating neoclassical style of the funerary architecture. On the far side, an octagonal oratorio stands at the center topped by a pavilion vault. In 1901 the entrance atrium and facade (by engineer Cesare Mazzocchi) was built in the Art Nouveau style.

A wealth of sculptures commissioned in the late 1800s and early 1900s by acclaimed artists adorn the area, artists whose works can be found in the piazzas and cemeteries of Lecco and throughout Lombardy: F. Confalonieri, the undisputed shining star, G. Branca, E. Bazzaro, C. Da Nova, L. Broggi, D. Barcaglia, P. Clerci, E. Agnati, R. Lainati, M.Vedani, A. Montegani, G. Castiglioni, F. Modena, L.Panzeri. In the late 1900s R. Rui, R. Piter, P. Atchugarry worked beside such artists, Lecchese by adoption, as G. Mozzanica, R. Pedroli, G. De Candido, L.Milani, F. Simoncini who sought infinite plastic, iconographic and material variations within the area of classic traditions.

Landscaped cemetery of Lecco-Laorca

The cemetery of Laorca is located in the Laorca district of Lecco, at the foot of Mount S. Martino, along the Gerenzone River, cradle of the Lecchese steel industry and a particular example of a historic, landscaped cemetery.

The environment is still highly suggestive: at the foot of the Corno Medale stands a sort of natural amphitheater, created in a rocky spur and fraught with caves and ravines. This site holds the cemetery, several private chapels dating from the late 1800s and early 1900s, the ancient cemetery church of San Giovanni ai Morti and the chapels in Via Crucis. In the early 1900s the industrial families of the zone chose this site to build their private chapels and monumental tombs in an eclectic style that melds classical features with the imposing features of Art Nouveau.

As a whole it can be defined as a Sacromonte, a sacred mountain, for centuries a devotional site. The terraces enjoy a splendid view of the city of Lecco and the lake.

Paris Catacombs Tour

Explore the ancient underground tomb that house over 6 million Parisian bodies.

Touring the Paris Catacombs, the haunting resting place of more than 6 million French citizens is a truly unique experience. Our tour group sinks deep into the tunnels of Paris and covers over a kilometer of catacombs littered with human remains. Explore the disturbing and extraordinary history of the burial grounds while learning the chilling stories and legends of these galleries of skeletons.

The Paris Catacombs were built as limestone quarries, which were mined for the building of some of Paris' most famous buildings and bridges. After the mid 1700s, the quarries were used to deal with Paris' overcrowded cemeteries, and millions of bodies were transfered from the cemeteries to the catacombs. In order to maximize the storage capacity of the quarries, the exhumed bodies were simply stacked on top of one another in different rooms in the Catacombs creating many miles of human-bone walls.

The Cemetery of San Amaro, in A Coruña (Northwest of Spain), a small town of 250.000 inhabitants, reachs this year its 200th anniversary.

Although the main tombs were stablished in that place in 1781, the cemetery was oficially opened in 1812. It stands nowadays working being the main cemetery of a village with 2 more public necropolis and a public crematorium (there are also 4 more cemeteries handled by the Church).

200 of its 20.000 graves corresponds to distinguished painters, writers, politicians, local heroes, aristocracy and business men who have been buried there for 2 centuries along.

It’s structured in three areas (civil, religious and british) and facing the sea. Some of it’s elements are protected according to spanish heritage laws and a part of the council budget is reserved every year to preserve it.

In fact, for the next years there’s a Renewal Planning (Plan Director) for changing the cemetery paviment, increasing seriously the green area, renewing the furnishing and improving the accesses for handicapped people.

In the other hand, guided tours will be restablished getting better signs elements for helping visitors to see all the prominent vaults and monuments.

Between its walls here are hidden “curious stories” as that one of the child Juan Darriba, local hero for saving a woman who was drowing in the beach, losing himself its life. He was 11 and from his death it’s grave has fresh flowers each year brougth still by the descendants of that women. Or the issue that the younger sister of Picasso was buried here when she died of difteria during the 4 years Picasso’s family lived in town. There were also rests of some german soldiers found dead during the First and Second World War.

The main entrance and chapel are one of the most beautiful examples of neoclasic style in that part of Spain.

ASCE scholars guides

Guided tour in AGM, September 14th 2012
This year, 6 children from Maribor elementary schools guided the ASCE members through Pobrežje cemetery.
An experience, very different for the visitors, scholars and the schools. It all started at Pobrežje cemetery in April, when Pogrebno podjetje Maribor (cemetery management company) hosted scholars from 2 schools for the cultural day. Scholars were presented with the history of the cemetery and important people burried there.

With an excellent prepared guidance, scholars immediately became aware that cemetery is not just a place of death and sadness. It was a place of many interesting findings and as they have learned about the important people in the cemetery, scholars were actually learning about themselves and their own history.

Guided tour in WDEC, June 1st 2012
For many of them, the experience was so impressive, that they have volunteered for becoming the guides by themselves. Preparations started and soon, they were guiding their first visitors, during the Week of Discovering European Cemeteries (WDEC).

After the first experience, our youngest guides worked with their english teachers and improved the guidance techniques and knowledge for their big challenge: guiding the ASCE members and partners through the cemetery at AGM 2012.

As it turned out, they were surprisingly relaxed, practical and interesting. Present members enjoyed the easy guidance where scholars presented the most important people of Maribor with just enough facts and interesting stories.

The project has many important implications and presents one of the best possible ways to get every European citizen in touch with the heritage, preserved in the cemeteries. Because scholars are not the only ones impressed. Their families, friends and many others are now learning from them about the importance of our cemeteries.

  1. Financial report for the year 2011 and first 8 months of 2012
  2. Changes of the charter of ASCE
  3. Report on EUCEMET project
  4. Report on Cemeteries route project
  5. Report on Week of Discovering European Cemeteries 2012
  6. Presentation of new promotional and other tools within ASCE (flyer, banner and insignia at the bottom of this webpage)
  7. Report on regular secretariat work
Members took note of the financial reports and no issues were raised about them.

Members of ASCE voted about the important changes of the old ASCE charter. Due to changes in Italian legislation in 2009, we had to make minor expressive changes which do not change the content or meaning of the charter. Changes were accepted with 100% of present members voting for the changes. Secretariat will submit the new charter to Italian authorities.

Mr. Yvan Corbat presented the EUCEMET project, its history, current status and further activities. The complete presentation of the project is avaliable for download on this link. Within project, 3 very important results are being achieved: photo exhibition (with opening ceremony that was held during AGM in Maribor), Augmented Reality Browser application which was presented during AGM and Q&A guides which will be presented at the next AGM. All the details will be presented at the ASCE website.

President Lidija Pliberšek briefed the members about the current status of Cemeteries route project, which is currently managed by outsurced company. Since it was not managed by the expectations of the members in the past year, further developments are being planned that will be introduced to all members. Steering Committee delegated president Lidija Pliberšek and Martin Ernerth to meet with current route managers and arrange future steps and developments.

This year, hundreds of events took place all over Europe in the Week of discovering European Cemeteries (WDEC). We have tried to gather them in the event calendar. All the events we have gathered are also presented in this PDF file.

In past 12 months, secretariat proposed and created many new tools for collaboration and promotion inside ASCE:
  • new website that already has editors from 3 countries; new editors from Netherlands and United Kingdom were arranged during AGM;
  • extended use of Google cloud with all documents now properly archived and accessible to other members;
  • managed photo archive in Picasa web albums that includes over 115 albums already;

The Certosa di Bologna is a former Carthusian monastery (or charterhouse) in Bologna, central Italy, which was founded in 1334 and suppressed in 1797.

In 1801 it became the city’s Monumental Cemetery which would be much praised by Byron and others. In 1869 an Etruscan necropolis, which had been in use from the sixth to the third centuries BCE, was discovered here. The Certosa is located just outside the walls of the city, near the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara, at the foot of the Monte della Guardia and the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca.

The public cemetery was established in 1801 using the pre-existing structure of the Certosa di San Girolamo di Casara, founded in the middle of the 14th century that was closed by Napoleon in 1797. The passion of the local nobility and aristocracy for monumental family tombs transformed the Certosa in an "open air museum," a stage of the Italian grand tour: it was visited by Byron, Dickens, Theodor Mommsen, and Stendhal. In particular the third cloister (or that of the Chapel) is noteworthy a tour of neoclassicisminspired structures with simbology from the age of enlightenment. Some tombs are painted in tempera, others are made of stucco and scagliola.

Within the church it is worth noting the triptych of the Passion of the Christ, a work of Bartolomeo Cesi and the wooden inlaid choir restored by Biagio De' Marchi in 1538 after a fire started by the Landsknechts of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. Other highlights are the paintings dedicated to episodes of the life of Christ, with the dimensions of around 450x350 cm, which were commissioned in the middle of the 17th century to Giovanni Andrea Sirani, Elisabetta Sirani, Francesco Gessi, Giovanni Maria Galli da Bibiena, Lorenzo Pasinelli, Domenico Maria Canuti, and the Neapolitan Nunzio Rossi. Other works by Antonio and Bartolomeo Vivarini, Ludovico and Agostino Carracci, in addition to Guercino, were transferred during the reign of Napoleon to the National Gallery of Art, Bologna.

An aspect that distinguishes the Certosa of Bologna from other monumental cemeteries of Europe is derived from the complex articulation of its use of space. To the original convent nucleus were added lodges, rooms, and porticos that recreate glimpses of a setting that recalls the city of the "living". Even the porticoed eastern entrance of the cemetery, which is linked to the one that leads to the Sanctuary of San Luca with only a small break, creates the continuity between necropolis and city. The discovery of an Etruscan necropolis during archeological excavations organized by the engineer Antonio Zannoni in order to extend the cemetery at the end of the 19th century are now in the Civic Archeological Museum of Bologna.

In the Bolognese cemetery are buried many important people for Italian history, including the statesman Marco Minghetti, the politician Gioacchino Napoleone Pepoli, the painters Giorgio Morandi and Bruno Saetti, the poet Giosuè Carducci and his favorite disciple Severino Ferrari, the writer Riccardo Bacchelli, the composer Ottorino Respighi, the castrato singer Farinelli, the Polish officer Giuseppe Grabinski, the entrepreneurs Alfieri Maserati, Edoardo Weber, Nicola Zanichelli and Ferruccio Lamborghini, the elementary school teacher undergoing the process of canonization Assunta Viscardi, and the tomb of Isabella Colbran, wife of Gioacchino Rossini.
